I took full advantage of that during my first two days on campus. Microsoft offers free drinks and discounted food at the cafeteria. Things weren’t easy, but my excitement just trumped all the exhaustion and uncertainty that I had. I was juggling work and taking care of my two kids with my husband at the same time. But we just tried to make the best of the situation and had a weekly happy hour on Fridays to catch up.ĭuring the bootcamp, my team worked on a project using C# and learned about Azure Dev Ops. I really missed everyone in the program since we just hit it off so well. It was my first time working from home full-time.
I traveled back to the East cost due to COVID and spent the rest of the program working remotely.

Learn how to work with others on a team Work on a group project where the team built an app using C# But as it turns out, the bootcamp focused on the following: Prior to starting LEAP, I thought we would spend most of the time solving questions about data structures and algorithms. Those were the groups that we would work with for the rest of the bootcamp. We were then divided into six groups (five SWEs and one TPM) and picked a name for our group. The challenge was to remember as many names and faces as we could. In our first class, we had a fun game where we went around the room introducing ourselves and telling one fun fact about ourselves.

30 were on the software engineer track (SWEs), and six on the Technical Program Manager track (TPMs). We spent the first day learning about the instructor, other students, Microsoft’s culture, and the LEAP program in more detail. We then went to our classroom and got ready for our first day of the bootcamp! I was ecstatic and still couldn’t believe I was part of LEAP. I was amazing to put the name to the face and got to know everyone’s coding journey. I eagerly introduced myself and started getting to know everyone. When I entered the building, there were already 10 LEAPers and the LEAP staff waiting in the lobby and talking with each other. I woke up early that day to pick out my outfit and made sure I had everything I needed such as my ID and water bottle. But meeting them in person would be totally different and even more exciting. Prior to that day, I had been corresponding with some of the LEAPers in my cohort on our Teams channel. I remember how excited and nervous I was on my first day in LEAP. I spent two days in the classroom at one of the buildings on the Redmond campus before transitioning to full-time remote work at the program’s request. I started the program when COVID started to spread in Washington state in early March. LEAP apprentices were considered contractors and received a compensation of $40/hr (40 hours/weel) with health insurance and paid time off at the time of my enrollment. It consists of a three-week bootcamp followed by 13 weeks with the sponsor team (the team who pays for and works with the apprentice). The LEAP Program is a 16-week apprenticeship for those with a non-traditional background to transition into tech. In this post, I will tell you exactly what happened during my LEAP apprenticeship program. One of the biggest questions I had after being accepted into LEAP was “What is it like being in such a competitive program?”.
